I had noticed that on the pre-order page, the date was pushed back to September… it was August, before. Now, I’ve seen an email from an inside source, indicating that the deck was cancelled at the last minute.

I hope it’s not true, but it seems to be pretty reliable info. *sigh*

[Edit @ 3pm: well, now the pre-order page linked above goes to a "product not found" page... I'd say this deck has been slain.]

[Edit 2008-06-05: now I have secondary confirmation from another source. Looking more solid, now, that the deck will not see the light of day.]

A gracious tip of my hat to Mary Greer for pointing out that Dark Horse has an information page for the Buffy Deck now! I see that the release date is August 13th, and the price is slated to be $14.99. Not bad. Plus, we have small versions of three cards I haven’t seen yet:

That Wheel card is really interesting! Is that the Master presiding over it, or is my mind playing tricks? Will have to ponder that.. if you look closely you can see a faint crown over his head. There’s some of the classic wheel imagery on there like the ROTA TARO, and the snake. But there’s also things I’m not used to seeing on the Wheel, like mountains in the background.

This one’s pretty cool-looking, if you ask me. I can definitely see aspects of temperance in the Angel character. I love the way they made the land and trees barren on one side, and fruitful on the other. Fantastic!

And here’s the Devil card from the upcoming Buffy deck from Dark Horse, due in August.

I was amused that, on message boards, this caused outrage in some of the fans not well-versed in tarot. Many took this to mean “Spike is the Devil” or some such nonsense. Silly humans.

I notice that the path in this card’s background resembles the one from Temperance. I should point out I have no idea if these are the final cards, or just versions in progress that were leaked.

Since it seems like they sometimes disappear from the sites I originally found them, I thought I’d do my part and post the images I’ve run across from Dark Horse’s upcoming Buffy deck. I cannot wait to buy this deck in August!

Fans have put a number of Buffy-themed decks out on the net, some better than others. For instance, this one or this one or another one I found on livejournal once but can’t locate again right now. But, now Dark Horse is going to release a Buffy deck designed by Rachel Pollack and drawn by Paul Lee. How exciting!

With so much depth and so many archetypal themes in the buffyverse, I have high hopes that this will be a deck I can seriously use, rather than just a fun collector’s item. Coming in August, according to the article!
